Artist's Comments

I am in love with my prismacolor colored pencils! This is the very first thing I've done with them, and of course I had to try them on black, since no other colored pencil would do so well. Thus, I did a study of a rose, realized it needed a little something more, and added the tiny blue dragon (it's a tea rose so it really is tiny), to put this piece in the fantasy section. The rose could be better, I need practice, but I think the effect of the whole thing is decent. Let me know what you think.

Prismacolor colored pencils on 9x12 black paper, NO computer editing! ORIGINAL IS FOR SALE! Message me if you're interested.

What I think is that you do Very well with these *s*

Now... not knowing exactly what a tea rose is like, I am wondering if the red shouldn't be.... more red?

News Item: Ahmadinejad mocks Obama, calls him a 'disappointment.'

Well all I can say to that is: 'The enemy of my enemy is NOT my friend.'

Why isn't obama on FAIL BLOG yet?

Actually, I'm very proud of how closely I got the coloring to the real thing, though I am guilty of using a little blue for shadowing instead of just black. This little rose was the prettiest pink, no red at all. *grins* And a tea rose is just a miniature of a regular rose, rarely growing over a foot tall. Perfect for indoor potted plants.

*grins* Awesome. Glad you like, and may your tax return come soon. *LOL*
:iconvaia:
LOL, already did ;p

You know what I'm holding out for
I just want to make sure I don't lose my chance at another one!

The coloring is perfect, spot on. The composition is stunning and on black it resembles Chinese decorative inlays, weavings, traditional Chinese art despite being of a western subject.

The rose is a little stylized. That does not detract one iota from its beauty. If it frustrates you, pick a good reference and do another rose. This one is a little imaginative with its pointed petals, they are a little like lotus petals crossed with rose petals. But in fantasy, it looks more like a hybrid variation of a tea rose, that world's tea roses. It looks plausible like a real flower, just not exactly like any breed of rose I know.

If you look at my deviation Blue Rose, that was done following a photo reference precisely, and was one of the first times I managed to get the exact shape of a rose plausibly and recognizably. It's tough. Don't change this one. Not one stroke.

Because it's just perfect for what it is -- fantasy. It actually looks better than it would if the rose was accurate. The little points on the petals give it a different feeling. Leaves are accurate and clearly put it in the rose family, the general shape is okay, it's the little points that aren't there on any roses I've seen. But they create harmony with the dragon's scales and spikes, it's just too perfect as it is.

The dragon is so realistic that I find myself checking to see those don't fly up and roost in my tree with the squirrels and birds to tease my cat. It's utterly gorgeous.

It may help to set a price and post it in the Artist Comment. I know that if I wasn't completely tied up in saving for a different artwork I would really be asking myself if I can afford this, because it's so beautiful and I love the combination.

Prismacolors rock. And it came out so strong and bright on the black! This is great!

Oh yeah. This would ROCK as a print. You'd sell a lot of them if you made it available as a print, it's the sort of image that could stay in print for years. The prints are both big prints for your wall and little 4 x 6" cards you can send to friends, and I think this would rock for either.

Two other observations:

This would make a wonderful tattoo design and may become very popular if you make it available to tattoo artists. Don't be surprised if people ask you for permission to tattoo it!

Also, this would make an incredible embroidery design -- the way it looks on black, most of the embroiderers I know in fantasy fandom and the SCA would be leaping on it. If you carefully made a line art version, tracing it, then match it with DMC colors you may have a design that embroiderers would really enjoy. If you know anyone who's into embroidery, show them the piece and see if they want to do the setup for that. Selling it as an embroidery design would mean having to do the research and maybe get someone to do the embroidery, then writing up the instructions. Might not be worth the trouble, but if a friend gets serious on embroidery the tracing could make a very nice gift.

I will have to do research on the embroidery thing. This is a very good design for tattoos, embroidery, and T-shirts because of it's relatively simple color scheme and striking design. Oh yeah, and I bet I'll sell a few stickers of it this year, too. *chuckle* But you're right, that embroidery will take some work to get going, though it would probably be worth it. If I liked that sort of thing, I'd jump on something like this. Thanks!
