Lucky Blue Jay

My kids were thumping their feet in the playpen in unison, making a fine racket. I look over to laugh at them. 'thump! thump! thump!WHUMP!'

A bird flew full speed straight into the window as if he'd planned to fly right into the house. It was louder than two toddlers heels on a playpen, and stopped both kids cold to see what had made the noise. *giggles*

Well I went outside to see what dead bird I was going to find in the yard, and lo and behold, this blue jay was still alive! He was badly dazed, catatonic when I found him, but as I carried him in and shifted him to a grip around his legs instead of around his wings he sort of came out of it a little. By the time I'd let the kids pet him and snapped a picture, he was happy to get back outside, and after about an hour in a tree he went back to whatever birdy things blue jays do. So rare such stories have happy endings! I'm so glad I got to tell this one. :-D
